Simon Fraser University came into Saturday's game in chasing first place in BCIHL Standings held by Thompson Rivers University, who won Friday at Trinity Western to make SFU's tilt hosting University of Fraser Valley a perfect first place battle when TRU comes to Burnaby on the 29th.
SFU came off the 4 game showcase tournament at Eastern Washington University where they went 2-0-2, yet Coach Mark Colletta and players on the team said they played down to their American competition.
So the Clan was looking for redemption in their internal battle, but the stifling style of play put on by UFV made it very difficult for SFU to open up the game and make it a speed type game the Clan is so accustomed to succeeding at despite 2 quick goals from Jas Rai and Ben Van Lare within 18 seconds of each other midway through the first period.
The Cascades fought off SFU's onslaught by icing the puck on relentless occasions slowing the game down to a halt, though the Clan would get a 3-0 lead on the power play on James Isaac's first goal in his first BCIHL game and take the 3 goal lead into the first intermission.
Seconds into the second period the Cascades would get on the board when Cameron Vandenbrink would pot a rebound bringing within 2.
UFV would get to within a goal of SFU as midway through the period, on a turnover, Graham Fast would beat Justin Mulholland five hole in a goal Mulholland would like to have back.
But that's as close as they would come as another one of SFU's new defensemen, Volodomyr Dashko would take a slapshot from the left faceoff circle and beat Cascades goalie Evan Thomas short side top corner.
Chris Hoe would also get his first BCIHL goal in the third as SFU would down their former perennial arch-rivals 5-2.
