A Texas Rangers fan his whole life, Ben Van Lare had a tough go of it last night in Kamloops.
Before boarding the bus to the interior, the BCIHL leader in points said, "I have celebrated birthdays at Rangers games. I've been waiting a long time to see them win it all."
I asked him if he wanted to know the score during game 7 between his Texas Rangers and the St. Louis Cardinals.
"Don't worry about it, if the game isn't over by then, it won't help me at all to know one way or the other." He said with a laugh.
Wayne Gretzky once assumed that if he never made it anywhere in hockey, he would have been a baseball player. His son, Trevor, is in the Chicago Cubs organization this coming summer, drafted this past June.
It seems the two sports compliment themselves very well.
Van Lare wasn't too affected by the Ranger's second-straight loss in the world series. He was just as excited about the late-game heroics of game 6 as any other ball fan. But, instead of getting distraught about the events in another sport last night, he focused on his own team, his own game, and passed for two more assists and an outright lead in BCIHL points with 13, and another home game against Selkirk this weekend.
Puck drop is 7pm tonight from Bill Copeland Sports Centre.
If you can't make it, listen to Myself, Matt Hunt, and my guest-colour man Scott Austin @ sfu-clan-hockey on Sportscanada.tv.
But if you can, come down early to get a famous Copeland dog form the concession at least!
You'd be crazy not to! Unless you lack tastebuds, that is…
